A real estate agent used a $109,180 rental payment from a Christchurch mall tenant to pay off his own personal debts.

Uwe Sachsenweger, 70, appeared in the Christchurch District Court on Tuesday to be sentenced for the 2017 theft.

Sachsenweger had acted as a property manager for a shopping mall in New Brighton, Christchurch.

On October 30, 2017, he received rental payment of $109,180 from a tenant of the mall, which he was meant to transfer to the company that owns the property.

Sachsenweger told the company’s director he wanted the money to be treated as a loan that he would pay back over five years with 5 per cent interest. He admitted in an email that he had used the money to pay his own personal debts.
