The Gore District Council has voted to buy Mataura’s railway station for $1.
The station, which is a heritage listing building, will be shifted to a new site in Mataura and used as a community facility but where the site is, and how much it will cost to restore the rapidly deteriorating building, remain unknown.
KiwiRail offered the building to the Mataura Community Board in 2018, on the condition that it relocated the building, removed earthquake-prone risks in the form of existing chimneys, and upgrade the building in conformity with any approved conservation plan that might be prepared due to the building’s heritage status.
