Auckland Council paid out $265 million in leaky homes claims in the past five financial years.

The claims allege the council breached its duty of care to  homeowners owners when inspecting and certifying leaky buildings as complying with the building code.

A total of 200 claims were lodged with the council in the 12 months to June 30 last year, relating to 25 Auckland properties. The council paid out $53m over the same period to help leaky home owners meet repair and re-cladding costs.
