People buying new homes in central Christchurch could be in line for a rates discount, but any proposal is likely to come up against strong opposition.
The city council is considering incentives to encourage people to move into the central city, so it can meet its aim of lifting the population from about 6000 to 20,000 people by 2028.
It decided this week to ask staff to consider a rates remission policy for the central city as part of a wider package of options to address the barriers to residential development within the four avenues. A report is due back on these options by the end of July.
