NEW YORK CITY

PHOTO: 123RF – Many flats in older brick apartment blocks in New York are known as “walk ups” because they lack elevators.

They’re calling them “walk ups”, but really that’s just a fancy name for flat without lifts.

Hobsonville Point is a community being developed at a rapid pace of knots to the North West of Auckland on the site of an old Air Force base.

Stand in the middle and pan around 360 degrees and there’s building work in shot at every moment.

It’s higher density living, but building apartments on a budget means no lifts, hence the debut of the “walk up” on the Auckland housing scene.
