The real estate advertisement talks of the Dunedin property’s tranquil views, sunny aspect, woodland garden and private patios.
The property at 65 Every St, Anderson’s Bay, has another notable feature. It was also the scene of one of New Zealand’s most sensational and controversial murders.
Five members of the Bain family were found dead in the house on June 20, 1994, by the family’s only surviving member David, then a 22-year-old part-time student.
Within a week he was charged with the murders and convicted at a trial in 1995. After serving about 13 years of a 16-year jail sentence, he was acquitted of the murders after a new trial in 2007. He, his wife and two children are believed to have moved to Australia.
