PHOTO: 123RF Losing a source of income is the most common reason people fall behind on their mortgage.

Renters are more likely than home-owners to spend more than a quarter of their total income on housing, according to Statistics New Zealand.

While numbers have ebbed and flowed over the years, there were about 260,000 renters spending more than 25 per cent of their income on housing, compared to about 240,000 homeowners.
