Not every potential purchaser of this classic Claude Megson-designed house in Remuera was dismayed by the leaks and sense of abandonment.
An Auckland family fell in love with the ‘”Wong” house and bought it “as is, where is” in September 2018, for $2.75 million, saving it from demolition and thereby preserving a key part of the city’s architectural history. The house was named after the Wong family, who commissioned the build in the 1960s.
Charlotte and Chris say originally they were looking to buy a commercial building, but were sidetracked: “We weren’t really in the market, but we saw a couple of pix, probably from the Stuff story, and really liked the style of the home,” says Charlotte. “We came through the open home and fell in love with it.”
Charlotte says they weren’t put off by the leaks nor the fact that the house had not been lived in for a year – listing agent Holly Cassidy of Ray White Epsom had described it as “not for the faint-hearted”.
