A couple has been ordered to pay their landlord more than $8000 for damaging a deck while cleaning it.

Thomas Hilton and Shelley Hilton damaged a 160-metre Kwila deck at their Queenstown Lakes home while water blasting it.

The tenants did not ask for their landlord’s permission before water blasting the deck.

The Tenancy Tribunal heard the tenants also failed to test it on a small area prior to cleaning the whole deck.
