Wellington tenant Mary has mixed feelings about the Government’s decision not to implement a capital gains tax.
She has asked not to be identified out of fear of upsetting her landlord.
“On the one hand, I’m upset about the unfairness of it all. But there’s also a tiny bit of selfish relief that now our landlord will stop going on about how terrible a capital gains tax would be and how it would force him to raise our rent,” she said.
“Of course, he will find another reason now. But I hate that – because of the housing shortage, and the way that the balance of power is with landlords right now – many of us renters are forced into a situation where we feel we have to keep quiet about our views on the issues surrounding renting, and even hope that our landlords won’t be given more excuses to raise our rents.”
