Esteemed SeaChange actor Sigrid Thornton and film producer husband Tom Burstall have called lights, camera, auction for their beloved North Melbourne home after 45 years.
The A-list couple purchased the Victorian terrace at 2 Carroll St in 1977 as a run-down former stables housing a plumber’s workshop.
“We were driving around and saw the building and fell in love with it,” Thornton said.
“It had been recently sold to a group of young people who wanted to start a restaurant but hadn’t passed their development plans with the council … so we made them an offer.”
Actor Sigrid Thornton’s North Melbourne home was once a stable.
The Victorian terrace has been loved by Thornton and film producer husband Tom Burstall for 45 years.
The Carroll St pad features memorabilia from the A-list couple’s various travels.
In 1991, the pair also bought the cottage next door at No. 4 and joined the two properties to create a sprawling inner city garden oasis.
“It was a gradual, but very loving process,” Thornton said.
“We’ve kept up with that by keeping it loved and cared for … there’s a lot of love in the walls.”
The home has also seen a number of famous faces over the years, with Thornton and Burstall hosting plenty of illustrious parties in their time there.
“We’d invite all of our friends and hundreds of people would come through, we’d have bands as well,” Thornton said. “We’ve laughed and cried and partied.”

And the couple are leaving behind some special memories from their various travels, which Thornton said “belonged with the house”.
The exterior walls and fireplace are embedded with Malibu tiles that the actor collected from an old tiling factory when travelling in the US.
There’s also an intricate Ethiopian carving above the fireplace, and other carvings and sculptures throughout the home.
“It’s bittersweet, but it’s time for another adventure,” Thornton said.
“We leave it with the greatest affection.”
The couple combined the two properties at No. 2 and No. 4 to create an inner city garden oasis.
