From publishing a horse racing tip sheet as a teenager, Sir Ron Brierley launched a career that took him to the headiest levels of New Zealand business.

He was regaled on both sides of the Tasman for his keen investment nous, sniffing out undervalued companies and restructuring them.

On Wednesday Australian media reported Brierley had been arrested at Sydney Airport and charged with possession of child exploitation images.

From racing horses, Brierley moved into publishing tips on investment and in 1961, he founded a company to take his own advice.

He later told a 2008 television documentary that he wanted to be “a participant rather than a commentator”.

RA Brierley Investments, later known as BIL, earned Brierley the title of “corporate raider”.
