Big isn’t always better. This year, it’s a small, two-bedroom house in Gisborne that has won the 2019 Supreme ADNZ Resene Architectural Design Award.
The 140 square-metre Huru House, designed by Andrew Simpson of Wiredog Architecture, reflects a Japanese influence. It’s designed as a series of cedar boxes sitting on a deck that floats over the rural site, offering views over Poverty Bay to Mahia Peninsula.
An exposed timber roof hovers over the cedar forms, creating a light, feathered shelter for the house and its outdoor spaces.
