Transmission Gully or Te Ara Nui o Te Rangihaeata in Māori is Wellington’s four-lane 27 km state highway that runs from Linden to MacKay’s Crossing (north of Paekākāriki).
The gully’s name comes from the 110,000-volt transmission line that formerly ran through it. Originally scheduled to open for traffic in April 2020, this $1.25 billion motorway finally opens today (31 March 2022). Here’s a full length video(no mind-numbing background music? ) of driving the $1.25 billion Transmission Gully from Tawa to Paekākāriki on the first day of opening.
