South Auckland golf

A south Auckland man has been inundated with offers of golf memberships after being shut out of an “elitist”club whose members include former Prime Minister John Key.

Alekisanita Loloa wanted to play golf at Royal Auckland and Grange Golf Club but was bewildered at the list of demands.

The private club isn’t currently taking members, but to be added to the waiting list, you need at least 12 referees, a nominator, and a seconder.

Loloa said the club’s “elitist, old boys” culture didn’t fit well in an area such as south Auckland, whose residents face high rates of overcrowding and deprivation.

Royal Auckland and Grange Golf Club is one of the only options for Loloa and his cousins, who all live in Māngere, to attend.

In an email seen by Stuff, a club staffer outlined the requirements.

“To apply for membership at Royal Auckland and Grange Golf Club, your intended nominator (proposer) shall submit a letter to the captain providing background information about you, your relationship with them and why they believe you will make a good member.
