The renowned ‘Stairway to Heaven’ on Oahu faces demolition due to the misbehavior of certain visitors. The iconic Haiku Stairs are slated for removal by the end of April, as per the decision of the Honolulu council, in response to repeated instances of tourists trespassing onto the restricted site.

Originally constructed by the US Navy during World War II, the Haiku Stairs were officially closed to the public in 1987, becoming Hawaii’s most famous off-limits tourist attraction. Despite the closure, the allure of its picturesque setting has enticed numerous selfie enthusiasts off the designated path.

Spanning 3922 steps along a mountain trail in Kaneohe, Oahu, the site has served as a backdrop for countless Instagram posts and TikTok videos, despite the ban on access.

Initially closed to prevent vandalism and littering, trespassers faced hefty fines as a deterrent. However, the remote and scenic location has posed challenges in enforcing the closure.

Esther Kiaʻāina, a member of the Honolulu city council, emphasized that the rampant illegal trespassing has rendered Haiku Stairs a significant liability and financial burden for the city.

In response to the ongoing issue, the council unanimously voted in 2021 to remove over 600 sections of the stairway. Mayor Rick Blangiardi described the action as long overdue, emphasizing that it’s a safety measure rather than a deliberate snub to tourists.

The removal project, estimated to cost $2.6 million, commenced with a ceremony last Wednesday, symbolizing respect for the local community, the land (ʻāina), and the cultural heritage of the Haʻikū area.
