When Rachel Wilson’s friends started talking about buying houses and tying the knot, she started looking at her own lifestyle — and realised she had “less than $1000” to her name.

It was a confronting “wake-up call” for the Sydneysider, who believed those life milestones would be out of reach for her unless she started to take control of her finances.

“I looked at myself and then at my friends, who were starting to talk about saving for property, marriage and kids, and I thought, ‘Oh my god — I’m never going to be able to do that’,” she told news.com.au.

“I freaked out and I realised I needed to fix myself. I liked buying shoes, clothes, lipstick and nice things, but it meant I couldn’t actually afford to do anything.

“I thought I was going to be living with my parents with my nice shoes, and honestly, that was a dawning realisation.”

At around the same time, one of Ms Wilson’s friends mentioned they had discovered an online tool that was helping them save, and while she was sceptical, she decided to give it a try.
