According to STUFF a pitch to upgrade an iconic tourism attraction on the Taupō lakefront may not be as simple as the premise of the Hole-in-One golf challenge.
The district council has received 176 public submissions about the proposal and views among those Stuff spoke to ranged from seeing it as an improvement to worrying about the effect on lake views or as a precedent for future lakeside structures.
The application from the commercial arm of the Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board – Taupō Moana Group Holdings (TGMH) – to redevelop the attraction would see a new café, visitor centre and events space built on the site.
Stage one of the Hole-in-One development would include a ticket office, café, public toilets, a viewing deck, the retaining of the lakeshore bank, and may potentially involve reconfiguring footpaths and parking areas.
Stage two would further develop the site into a multi-functional facility, potentially including an events space, education and visitor centre, waterfront access, a floating dock and an operational hub/storage area for on water activities.
