A Storied History and Royal Connections

Huka Lodge was founded in 1924 by Irishman Alan Pye as a simple fishermen’s camp, with white canvas tents along the trout-rich Waikato River. Over the years, it evolved into a world-renowned luxury lodge, attracting distinguished guests from around the globe, including royalty. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has stayed at the lodge multiple times, particularly enjoying the trout fishing opportunities.

A New Era Begins

Huka Lodge closed on May 1, 2024, for a significant refurbishment that has taken 10 months to complete. General manager Kerry Molloy told Stuff Travel that the lodge is now an incredible space, and those who have had a sneak preview have been left “gobsmacked.”

The lodge officially reopens on Saturday, March 1, with a full house of guests, many from North America but also from New Zealand. The refurbishment has doubled the number of rooms since the last renovation in 1984, making the space a better fit for a larger number of guests.

Enhanced Amenities and Timeless Elegance

“We’ve double-sided the fireplace in the main lounge, moved out towards the river, added a whole room with spectacular views of the Waikato River. We’ve also expanded the dining room and upgraded the terrace,” Molloy said.

The original interior designer from 1984, Virginia Fisher, returned to oversee the latest works, ensuring that the lodge retained its unique character. “It was crucial that we didn’t ruin the look and feel of Huka Lodge because it’s been here for such a long time,” Molloy explained. “We’ve got multi-generational guests, and it needs to have that Huka Lodge feel. Virginia has done a magnificent job.”
