He made the trip from Sydney to Newcastle in NSW over and over to inspect properties, put up with several agents cancelling on him, and watched others pip him at the post.

“It was exhausting; it was wearing me down,” the 31-year-old said.

“It puts you on edge just constantly looking, you know, you’re still working, you’re doing other things, it’s like a job on top of all that trying to find a place.”

When he finally did move to Newcastle, he had to take refuge above a pub while the search continued.

He had a good rental history, but just wasn’t getting through.

It’s becoming a common complaint — renters can’t seem to find a place, they’re not getting approved, the properties are too expensive and the living conditions, well, perhaps they don’t live up to the promise of the cost.
