coastal development

A new holiday-home development is offering seaside sections with “best views in New Zealand” from just $99,000. But there’s a catch.

The 24 sections, located at Mōkau’s former Seaview Holiday Park one hour north of New Plymouth, are well known as being vulnerable to coastal erosion and any holiday home built there must be readily relocatable in case the sea gets too close.

It could be decades before that happens but the development gives a glimpse into how coastal areas in the future will be designed to cope with climate change.

The Mōkau Sands development is advertised as a “slice of Kiwiana” and will also include a 50-seat cafe and six cabins. Many residents of the tiny South Waikato town of Mōkau are enthusiastic about what the development could do for the area.
