The year 2024 is shaping up to be another landmark year for nudity enthusiasts around the world, with events such as a nude cruise and beach weddings on the horizon.
Earlier this year, Bare Necessities, a tour and travel company, announced an 11-day voyage from Miami to the Caribbean in collaboration with Norwegian Cruise Line, set to sail in February 2025. The Big Nude Boat will make stops in the Bahamas and Puerto Rico, promising a “once in a lifetime experience” with amenities tailored for every style of bare cruising.
In Sardinia, couples will soon have the chance to exchange vows in the nude at Is Benas Beach, which has a designated naturist area. This development was confirmed by Luigi Tedeschi, the mayor of San Vero Milis, the nearest town. “Nudity has nothing to do with sex. For naturists, it’s a philosophy of life, and is linked to nature,” Tedeschi explained. “It should be respected – so why not?”
Moreover, there are now more places than ever to sunbathe, swim, or build sandcastles au naturel at clothing-optional beaches worldwide. From rocky coastlines to powdery sands, bustling city bays to secluded shores, hundreds of beaches now legally or de facto permit naturist activities.
Nicky Hoffman of The Naturist Society, managing editor of Nude & Natural magazine and co-author of The World’s Best Nude Beaches & Resorts, notes, “Soft, smooth sand, warm ocean breeze, gentle ocean waves and lots of other naturists make for a great clothing-optional beach.”
While it might seem like a modern trend, clothing-optional beach destinations have a long history, dating back to the prudish Victorian era. American poet Walt Whitman in the 1880s celebrated the joys of “the free exhilarating ecstasy of nakedness in Nature.” The naturist movement flourished in Europe and North America in the early 20th century, eventually leading to the creation of city parks, campgrounds, and beaches for those who wanted to experience nature in their natural state.
