Sir Peter Leitch Takes a Step Back from Public Life but Remains a Mad Warriors Fan

Known as The Mad Butcher, Sir Peter Leitch and his wife Lady Janice have moved from their home on Waiheke Island to a retirement village in Auckland, signaling a transition to a quieter life.

At 80 years old, Sir Peter, the first knight of New Zealand Rugby League, acknowledges that his memory is starting to fade but maintains his sharp wit and humor. “I’m not sure how long I’ve been here,” he shared with the Herald, reflecting on his new surroundings.

Despite his love for the retirement village lifestyle, Sir Peter fondly refers to Waiheke as his “happy place” and continues to maintain a residence there, enjoying simple pleasures like feeding seagulls on the beach.

Born in Wellington in 1944, Sir Peter overcame early challenges including dyslexia to become a successful entrepreneur. His Mad Butcher chain of stores, born out of a marketing gimmick, spanned across New Zealand at its peak, showcasing his business acumen.

Reflecting on his achievements, Sir Peter remains humble yet proud of his journey. “Not bad for a guy who couldn’t read or write,” he remarked, highlighting his induction into the New Zealand Business Hall of Fame and knighthood for contributions to business and philanthropy.

Throughout his life, Sir Peter’s passion for rugby league, especially his involvement with the Warriors, has remained steadfast. He treasures memories like managing the New Zealand Kiwis during their triumphant victory over Australia in 2005.

As he embraces retirement, Sir Peter looks to the future with gratitude and contentment. “I’ll take each day as it comes,” he said, reflecting on a life well-lived surrounded by cherished memories in his retirement village.
