The grand Château d’Armainvilliers, formerly in the possession of the King of Morocco, has been listed for sale at an astounding £363 million, positioning it among the world’s most exorbitant private residences.
Nestled in Seine-et-Marne on the outskirts of Paris, this sprawling estate is a marvel to behold. Its origins trace back to the late 19th century, built upon the ancient foundations of a 12th-century castle. Originally under the ownership of the Rothschild banking dynasty, it later passed into the hands of King Hassan II of Morocco in the 1980s.
Under King Hassan II’s tenure, extensive renovations and enhancements were undertaken, transforming the property into a lavish retreat. Boasting over 100 rooms, 2500 square meters of living space, 1000 hectares of land, and a private lake, among other opulent amenities, the château stands as a testament to luxury.
Following King Hassan II’s passing, his son sold the estate to an undisclosed buyer from the Middle East in 2008. Now, it has resurfaced on the market commanding a staggering €425 million.
Managed by Ignace Meuwissen, a prominent advisor to the global elite, the sale of this estate is emblematic of opulence and grandeur. However, speculation abounds regarding the feasibility of such a lofty price tag, with French real estate experts deeming it excessive and inflated.
Situated less than 20 miles from Paris, the château epitomizes regal living. Beyond its expansive living quarters, the property showcases luxurious enhancements implemented during King Hassan II’s ownership. These include a hammam spa, beauty and hairdressing salon, and even a fully-equipped medical and dental facility, ensuring the utmost comfort and convenience for the royal family.
Internally, the décor reflects classic Moroccan aesthetics, with intricate mosaics and wall tiles adorning the interiors. Additionally, extensive equestrian facilities, including stables capable of housing 50 horses, cater to equine enthusiasts.
Yet, perhaps the most extravagant feature lies beneath the surface. Dubbed ‘the metro’, a vast network of tunnels, kitchens, cold rooms, storage spaces, and staff quarters facilitates seamless operation and service without disrupting the tranquility of the residents.
Meuwissen defends the staggering price, citing not only the property’s intrinsic value but also the expansive land it encompasses, offering myriad development opportunities. However, skepticism persists among French real estate circles, questioning both the valuation and the anonymity shrouding the current owner.
