In the Herbst family’s Takapuna home in Auckland there’s a century-old photograph of a group of people strolling along the beach that’s at the bottom of the street.
Wearing their finest hats and full skirts they don’t look much like today’s shorts and jandal-clad crowd, but it’s a reminder of just how popular that golden strip of sand has been for generations.
Carl and Barbara’s spot, in particular, has the covetable combination of having the beach in one direction and the shops and restaurants in the other.
