There’s a certain image that might spring to mind when you wonder how one of Australia’s top-earning real estate agents lives.
Ric Serrao defies all of those expectations, despite dominating the ritzy eastern Sydney suburbs and notching up hundreds of sales a year, each worth millions of dollars.
But you won’t find him living in some jaw-dropping cliffside monolith made of stone, marble and chrome, nor is there a sports car worth six figures parked in the driveway.
Not that there’s anything wrong with that – it’s just not his style.
“I’m a bit boring, I suppose,” Mr Serrao said after throwing open the door to his North Bondi home, as part of a new realestate.com.au series called Agent Abodes.
“It’s a knock-down, unrenovated, very ordinary home, but the convenience is fantastic – we love living here. It’s a short walk down to the beach, it’s got a great garden, the block is level, but more importantly, I’m part of a really good community, which is important to me.”
Mr Serrao is the director of a pair of Raine & Horne offices, one in Double Bay and the other in Bondi Beach – two of the most prestigious and expensive real estate patches in the city.
According to industry rankings released in 2021, he was the third top-selling agent in Australia with more than $315 million worth of deals in a single year.
Ric Serrao, director of Raine & Horne in Double Bay and Bondi, is one of Australia’s top-selling agents.
And while Mr Serrao is passionate about property and makes a tidy commission by selling a lot of it, he keeps his feet firmly planted on the ground and his ego in check.
“I’m an ethnic guy from the western suburbs,” the 55-year-old said.
“Before I started working in real estate in 1988, I worked at Kentucky Fried Chicken, and before that I was a chook plucker on a production line at Ingham’s. I’ve also been an apprentice mechanic and drove taxis for a while.”
Mr Serrao’s very first pitch back then was for a listing in Vaucluse, where the vendor laughed him out of the mansion after the rookie realtor mispronounced the brand of his European kitchen appliances.
“I didn’t get that job,” he jokes.
