OPINION: A regular weekend trip to your local hardware store just got a whole lot more interesting now that you can pick up a new house along with the screwdriver and water blaster.
Bunnings says it has sold 50 of its “affordable”, ready-made Clever Living homes, and one registered builder says he has a waiting list of 32 people waiting to have homes built.
But what does this say about the construction industry in New Zealand? It says heaps, when a huge hardware store chain can produce a two-bedroom 60 square-metre for $62,400, and a four-bedroom house for $101,700, excluding GST. And that price includes specified appliances, light fixtures, bathroom products, timber frames, roof materials, and building materials.
