PHOTO: BRADEN FASTIER/STUFF – Housing and Urban Development Minister Phil Twyford announced 200 more Hutt Valley Housing New Zealand properties would benefit from the thermal upgrade programme by mid-2019.

David and Carol Coffin used to rug up in bathrobes and sit by the fire to keep warm in their old state house.

But now their Taita, Lower Hutt, home has had upgraded insulation the couple have noticed their home is warmer and their power bill has reduced.

On  Monday, Housing and Urban Development Minister Phil Twyford used  their home to announce an  extra 200 Hutt Valley state homes would receive the insulation.

The Coffins’ home was one of 66 state houses retrofitted with insulation and heaters in a pilot programme launched in May. So far work on 60 of those homes has been completed.

The state house which the Coffins have shared since 1979 used to be “freezing” in the winter months.
