2021 wasn’t all about A-listers off-loading real estate – there were also some eye-watering property purchases made by the wealthiest and most famous on the globe.
From tech billionaires to musicians and even an Aussie supermodel, these multi-million dollar purchases are enough to make us wish we invested in Bitcoin about a decade ago.
Evan Spiegel and Miranda Kerr – $138 million
Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel and wife Miranda Kerr reportedly spent an unbelievable $138 million on a huge estate in the sought-after neighbourhood of Holmby Hills in Los Angeles, California.
Oddly, however, the stratospheric sale price isn’t even the most remarkable thing about the purchase.
No, what’s crazier than spending $138 million on a single property is spending $138 million on an unfinished, unliveable home that’s still under construction.
But, when you’re worth an estimated $12.5 billion, what’s another $10 million – $20 million to create your ultimate family dream home?
Jeff Bezos – $108 million
Amazon founder and second-richest person on planet earth, Jeff Bezos, surprised exactly zero people when news broke he’d dropped $108 million on a devastatingly gorgeous oceanfront estate in Maui, Hawaii.
Located on the southwest side of the tropical island, the 56,656-square-metre property boasts its own private beach, 420-square-metre main home, numerous guest houses and a whopping 65-square-metre, circular-shaped pool.
Bezos, whose personal net worth has almost doubled since the beginning of the pandemic, is now thought to be worth roughly $276 billion, and when taking that into account, spending $108 million on a beach house is quite frugal, right?
The Weeknd – $98 million
Canadian music megastar The Weeknd, real name Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, almost entered the nine-figure club with his purchase of a staggering, grand mansion in Lower Bel-Air, California.
Overlooking the Bel-Air country club, the lavish 6475-square-metre estate was subjected to a thorough renovation and upgrade by the home’s previous owners, which added an additional 1200-square-metres of living space and an indoor pool and spa.
With a personal fortune estimated to be around $276 million, The Weeknd’s new home has cost him roughly 35 per cent of his total net worth. Still, with a personal music studio, Turkish hammam (bathhouse), movie theatre, gym and a stunning outdoor infinity pool, we definitely understand why he wanted the opulent digs.
Scooter Braun – $90 million
Record executive and manager to the stars Scooter Braun made headlines in LA’s property scene in September when news broke he’d spent a massive $90 million on a stunning six-bedroom, nine-and-a-half bathroom mansion in LA’s popular suburb of Brentwood.
Ever the shrewd businessman, Braun, who manages music industry juggernauts like Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande, actually purchased the opulent property for $6.9 million cheaper than its original asking price.
Amenities? Well, apart from the home itself being designed by architectural luminary Noah Walker, the property boasts indoor and outdoor pools, an eight-car garage, gigantic movie theatre and contemporary, manicured gardens.
Kanye West – $79 million
2021 has been a difficult year for Ye.
The hip-hop doyen’s personal life was thrown into disarray when his A-lister wife, Kim Kardashian, filed for divorce in February after a well-publicised split in the second half of last year.
Worse still, Kardashian paid out West’s half of their awe-inspiring Hidden Hills mansion, leaving the musician without a place to call home.
