The majestic region of Taranaki on the west coast of New Zealand’s North Island is set to mark a new price record that will far exceed any other local sale.
If this contemporary residence, in the exclusive gated Tapuae Country Estate near Omata village, does achieve its NZ$5.75 million asking price, the property will be the most expensive home sold in the area by about NZ$2 million.
Beau Burmester, selling agent with Property Brokers New Plymouth, said the popular property is likely to sell for close to NZ$6 million.
“The home is 900 square meters (9,700 square feet) and has been built to an exceptional standard with commanding 360-degree views of the sea, mountains and city,” he said, adding that growing families would make the ideal candidates as the next owners of the residence.
“It is close to the internationally renowned Green School (which has attracted many families from overseas) and it’s also near the very popular village and beach of Oakura,” Mr. Burmester said.
Like many regional locations around the world, New Zealand’s rural and coastal areas have experienced a surge in popularity since the pandemic.
“Since coming out of the first lockdown, the market in New Zealand has gone nuts with an overall average increase in values of around 37%-42%,” he said.

Amenities
Tapuae Country Estate is an exclusive coastal farm community comprising 30 one-acre freehold home sites set within a picturesque 144 acres of extensively landscaped farmland where cattle roam freely. There are also vast ocean views, direct access to the waterfront and tennis courts.
Created to optimize the striking ocean panorama, the home has vast walls of glass and seamless free-flowing living spaces opening onto grand wraparound terraces.
The Omata home has multiple gathering spots for family members, including the lavish kitchen with stone surfaces, a long freestanding island bench, a window backsplash, gourmet appliances and butler’s pantry.
Homeowners are spoiled for choice with places to sit back and unwind and enjoy the peaceful view, however there are also several spots in the main residence or the self-contained “pool house.” There is ample room to install a pool and the cabana is fully equipped with a kitchen and bathroom.
Neighborhood Notes
The modern home is a short drive from the village of Oakura and a roughly five-hour drive south from Auckland’s central business district in the coastal region of Taranaki.
According to local Māori legend, Taranaki was a mountain God who lived alongside the North Island’s three other main mountains; Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngaruhoe on the Central Plateau.
Taranaki fought with Tongariro for the heart of Mount Pihanga, and after losing the battle strode off to its current location, creating the Whanganui River in its wake.
Taranaki’s property market is made up of three districts; New Plymouth, Stratford and South Taranaki. The median house price in Taranaki was NZ$590,000 in January, according to REINZ.
