A massive new development in Sydney’s southwest, Moore Point, is set to add 11,000 new homes across an area about the size of eight Melbourne Cricket Grounds. Located in Liverpool, this ambitious project is one step closer to approval after nearly a decade of red tape and has been released for public consultation. The development aims to transform an old industrial area by the Georges River into a mini “river city,” offering a glimpse into how Australia might tackle its housing crisis.

Moore Point will feature towering glass apartment blocks on a 32-hectare site, alongside shopping centers, cafes, restaurants, parklands, and a school catering to 1,000 students. With backyards and garages replaced by balconies, residents will have access to public transport through a pedestrian bridge connecting to the Liverpool CBD and train station.

The project aligns with the Australian government’s goal of building 1.2 million homes by July 2029 to alleviate the housing shortage. Master Builders Association has forecast a nationwide shortfall of around 166,000 homes, making developments like Moore Point crucial to meeting housing demands.

NSW Premier Chris Minns supports the project, emphasizing that building upwards, rather than expanding urban sprawl, is essential for Sydney’s growth. Moore Point is currently in the rezoning phase and, if approved, will need further planning and building approvals.

The developer, Coronation Property, has pledged 400 affordable housing units for frontline workers. After years of delays, Coronation’s managing director, Joe Nahas, expressed excitement about the project’s progress, calling it the “jewel in the crown” for southwestern Sydney.

Sydney’s population is expected to reach 6.4 million by 2041, requiring an additional 500,000 homes. Moore Point and similar projects could be a significant step toward meeting these needs. However, there are concerns about the strain such high-density developments might place on local infrastructure.
