Bowen House – the Parliament building where ministers, dozens of MPs and hundreds of government staff work –  “may be close to” being earthquake prone.

Speaker Trevor Mallard says a verbal report from engineers to Parliamentary Service suggested that on some measures the 22-storey office block is in the range of being less than a third of National Building Standard.

Those measures will be consolidated and he will receive a final assessment mid-next week. Mallard stressed there is no immediate risk to staff in the 29-year-old tower.
