Traffic congestion concerns may prove a stumbling block to plans for 2000 new homes in Queenstown.

Even if the council agrees to allow development at the controversial Ladies Mile site, it will likely be several years before any homes are built.

The decision to investigate a plan to develop the area was supported by the full Queenstown Lakes District Council at a meeting in Wanaka on Thursday.

A month earlier, the council rejected three Special Housing Areas (SHA) proposals, which would have created 600 homes in the area.
