The Chinese-owned luxury Park Hyatt will open in mid-September in Auckland in the midst of a hotel rooms oversupply caused by border restrictions to keep out global pandemic Covid-19.

It is the first big investment by Chinese investors Fu Wah, with the 195-room, five-star hotel set to open on September 15, more than two years later than its original completion date.

Tourism and leisure business consultant Stephen Hamilton of Horwath HTL said in the short term Auckland would have an oversupply because 40 per cent to 50 per cent of the guest and tourist demand was not there.

It is the first major hotel opening in Auckland this year with almost another 700 rooms in five hotels scheduled to open before the end of 2020. The hotel developments were committed to when New Zealand was enjoying a tourism boom.
