A Brisbane home hailed as “the ugliest house” on the street has sold for a whopping $1.535 million in a move that shocked both the sellers and the real estate agent.

The “ugly duckling” cottage at 43 Arthur St, Fortitude Valley, sold well above its reserve price last week.

In fact, it was such hot property that six people had to fight it out for the run-down house.

Real estate agent Emmanuel Calder, of Mane Property, who sold the property, said “the result far exceeded everyone’s expectations”.

“There’s no point trying to put lipstick on a pig,” he told news.com.au.

“It’s obviously the ugliest house on the street.

“The owners knew it, we knew it, there was no point hiding.”

The four-bedroom, two bathroom, 465sq m property near Brisbane’s CBD was marketed as an “ugly duckling” on real estate sites.

“Appearances can be deceiving but don’t let this ugly duckling fool you,” the description reads.

Mr Calder admitted that although they cleaned the house up inside, there was no way to hide its shoddy exterior.

“They (the sellers) all knew it needed renovations,” he said.

The inside of the house was cleaned up, but it was still far from a luxurious house.
