Victoria University of Wellington has bought the McLean Flats, once earmarked for social housing redevelopment, and it has already applied for the right to demolish it.

The sale comes despite plans in the works for years to convert the building, empty since July 2012, into a 35-unit social housing complex.

Victoria University chief operating officer Mark Loveard said the university had purchased the abandoned flats from Housing New Zealand in order to provide a public pedestrian link route from the university to Ghuznee St.

“The precinct plan we are developing for the site is also likely to include science and engineering facilities.”
