State Highway 1 (SH1) from Levin to Foxton is undergoing vital safety improvements while the Ōtaki to North of Levin (Ō2NL) project progresses. A key feature is the installation of a roundabout at the Waitārere Beach Road intersection, aimed at reducing serious accidents. Other upgrades include wide painted centrelines, median barriers, and turnaround facilities to enhance road safety. These measures are part of a larger effort to ensure safe travel in the region as drivers transition to the new SH1 route once the Ō2NL highway is complete.
