Waiwera locals are calling on Auckland Council to pay attention to a “forgotten place” as evidence of the village’s decline boils up from the ground below.
Home to the North Auckland’s now-derelict Waiwera Hot Pools, the once bustling seaside thermal village is suffering from dwindling visitor numbers.
And now the hot water springs which made the village famous – Waiwera means ‘hot water’ in Māori – are bubbling up from the ground and destroying residents’ lawns and gardens.
