A snow day doesn’t have to mean putting your golf game on hold in Wānaka, thanks to a new indoor golfing simulator business founded by three friends with a shared passion for the sport and a friendship spanning two decades.

Jeff Campbell, Jason Bopp, and Kahu Vincent, all in their 40s, first crossed paths as students at Mount Aspiring College (Mac) in the early 2000s. Despite their enduring love for golf and long-standing ties to Wānaka, they all work in the construction industry.

“About a year ago, we decided it was time to stop talking and start doing,” Campbell said. “Kahu originally thought of installing a simulator in his garage, but Jason suggested opening a shop instead.”

After extensive research and visits to golf simulator setups across New Zealand and Australia, the trio is set to open their new venture, Golf Swing, at the Northlake retail area tomorrow.

Vincent, who moved to Wānaka from Wellington as a teenager, started playing golf at a young age and returned to the sport after a break. Bopp and Campbell honed their skills on the Lake Hāwea and Wānaka golf courses, respectively. All three are active members of the Wānaka Golf Club.

Bopp noted that the Northlake retail area is becoming a vibrant community with growing foot traffic, thanks to neighboring stores and a popular café.

Initially, the friends will manage Golf Swing with assistance from their families, but they plan to hire staff and apply for a liquor license in the future.

Golf Swing will feature a mini-putt course and golfing games for children, alongside three Trackman simulators from Denmark, sourced through an Australian supplier. The venue aims to offer a reliable golf experience regardless of the weather, providing a space for practice or family fun.

“We wanted to create a place where people can continue to enjoy golf, whether it’s for training or bringing the kids,” Campbell said.
