The cricket great’s loved ones have suggested another name option after visiting a makeshift memorial at his statue.
It comes after it was earlier announced the seating block would be called the SK Warne Stand in honour of the sport legend, who died on March 4.
7NEWS Melbourne sport reporter Tom Browne said on Tuesday Warnie’s family had told the Melbourne Cricket Club of the legendary bowler’s preferred option.
“My understanding is that it will be called the Shane Warne stand,” Browne said.
“I spoke to a senior government source who emphasised the final decision will be down to the Warne family.”
Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews announced the initial name change following Warne’s shock death of a suspected heart attack while on holiday in Thailand.
Mr Andrews said at the time it would be “a permanent tribute to an amazing Victorian”.
“I’ve just informed the Warne family that the Government will rename the Great Southern Stand at the MCG – the place he took his hat trick and 700th wicket – to honour Shane and his contribution to the game.”
The development comes after Warne’s three grieving children visited the statue of their late father outside the MCG.
The area has become a shrine to the much-loved leg spin bowler, with flowers, tributes and gifts left at the foot of the monument.
