A wealthy New Zealand businessman’s plan to develop culturally sensitive land in the Cook Islands is at the centre of an intensifying stoush.

Long-time funeral director and property developer Richard Ireton has leased the land at Avana Point, neighbouring Vaerota Marae.

However, some Cook Islanders have become increasingly concerned over potential building on the land.

A cabin erected on the site was fire-bombed earlier this month, and a 23-year-old man was arrested and charged with arson.
