Wellington Railway Station is being considered earthquake prone while it is assessed against new guidelines.

While notices advertising the new status were posted around the station on Monday, KiwiRail capital projects and  asset development chief operating officer David Gordon said it was not believed there was an increased risk to the public or staff.

There had been changes to technical guidelines for Engineering Assessments,  however the building itself had not changed, he said.

“If it were a normal office building the overall building structure would be rated at 65-75 per cent New Building Standard (NBS). But because the office is part of a public building it has to meet a higher standard than a normal office building.”
