A young Australian woman has shared the surprising and positive impact of being a single mum: it made her feel more attractive.
Rachel Witteman, a 26-year-old real estate agent and mother of one, has been single for 18 months. After her breakup, she quickly gained attention on TikTok, revealing how life had changed for her.
“Does it get easier? No. But do you get hotter? Yes,” she joked in one of her videos, a sentiment that resonated with other women who shared similar experiences post-breakup.
“This is a fantastic perspective,” one commenter praised, while others chimed in, agreeing with the sentiment. “The glow-up is real,” one wrote, while another simply said, “Same.”

Ms. Witteman’s journey gained even more traction as she pointed out that even through the tough times, a “win is a win.”
After the breakup, Ms. Witteman noticed a shift in how she looked and felt, often receiving compliments from friends and strangers alike. “People keep telling me, ‘You’re glowing!’ Probably because I’ve shed the weight of a burden I was carrying,” she shared.
She added that feeling good on the inside directly impacts how you look on the outside. “If you’re not happy, it shows,” she explained, saying the breakup allowed her to rediscover her self-identity and refocus on herself.
Since the breakup, Ms. Witteman has completely overhauled her lifestyle, dedicating time to self-care by going to the gym, socializing more, and eating healthier. This renewed focus has not only made her feel better, but also improved her life as a mother.
“You can’t pour from an empty cup,” she said, emphasizing the importance of personal fulfillment.
Interestingly, Ms. Witteman’s transformation aligns with research suggesting that single women often fare better than those in relationships, especially in terms of health.
Paul Dolan, a professor of behavioural science at The London School of Economics, shared findings that suggest single women tend to be healthier and happier. “If you’re a man, you should probably get married. If you’re a woman, don’t bother,” he said, pointing out that while marriage benefits men, women’s health often declines after marriage.
Psychologist Carly Dober agreed, noting that women are more likely to thrive after a breakup due to their tendency to seek help, invest in self-care, and embrace newfound freedom.

“Women tend to find more time and space to invest in themselves, trying new things like haircuts or styles that their ex-partners never liked. This self-exploration can leave them feeling more confident and attractive than before,” Dober said.
