Wellington woman Susan Price has taken the unusual step of giving away a lovingly restored landmark property.
Chevening, a block of four apartments at 90 Salamanca Rd – just across the road from Victoria University – has long been a piece of the city’s architectural history and now, thanks to Price, will be owned and maintained by Heritage New Zealand, in a gesture the organisation has called “unprecedented”.
Giving the building away, rather than selling it and distributing the proceeds, was a deeply personal choice for Price but one she said had been 40 years in the making.
