PHOTO: KEVIN STENT/STUFF – Despite Wellington being in desperate need of more housing, these apartments at 29 Wellington Rd, in the suburb of Hataitai, are empty. They may one day be demolished to make way for a new road.

Years after being bought by the Government, the future of a series of prominent Wellington homes remains in limbo – as does the planned road they were in the way of.

The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) purchased a number of homes on Wellington Rd, in the suburb of Hataitai, as far back as 2012, including one for $1.175 million. Some have been abandoned, others are tenanted, while some on the street are still privately owned.

Those living there remain in limbo, unsure if they will be booted out or if they can put down roots.
