Western United, an A-League soccer club, has successfully secured the funding needed for its ambitious $2 billion super-development in Melbourne‘s west, which includes a 15,000-capacity stadium. The project, situated in the fringe suburb of Tarneit on a 62.5ha site, will encompass various components such as apartment blocks, housing subdivision lots, a hotel, commercial office space, an indoor sports arena, training and medical facilities, shops, bars, and parkland.

The funding milestone has been achieved through a $50 million debt facility from Johnson Controls, a New York Stock Exchange-listed building technology group. This financial support enables Western Melbourne Group, the owner of Western United, to kick-start the project. Additional funding comes from a public-private partnership involving Wyndham Council, Melbourne developer YourLand Developments, and private investors, including notable athletes like Collingwood star Scott Pendlebury, tennis player Thanasi Kokkinakis, and Australian Olympic basketballers Dante Exum and Chris Goulding, along with affluent Melbourne families.

The development, with plans already approved by the Victorian state government, played a crucial role in Western United obtaining an A-League license in 2018. Construction has begun on a 5000-seat training facility at the site, intended to host home games in the current year. The new stadium is anticipated to be completed by the 2026-27 A-League season, marking a significant milestone for Western United and providing a permanent home for fans in Tarneit, City of Wyndham.
