Kathryn Welling has been writing about real estate on Sydney’s northern beaches for 30 years. This month she finishes up and recalls the highs and lows of her career.
Thirty years ago a typical suburban house in Sydney cost around $180,000 and interest rates were hovering around nine per cent.
If you wanted to buy a house you would stand outside a real estate agent’s window looking at pictures on display.

If you ventured inside the aforementioned agent would drive you to three potential contenders he had on his books, starting with the least promising and finishing with the property he was sure you would like the most.
Property ads in the newspaper were primarily black and white classifieds minus an image.
It was into this landscape that I started my real estate writing career, switching from general reporting and editing.
