A former real estate agent has been sentenced to 15 months in jail for possessing methamphetamine, a decision that prompted her mother to storm out of the courtroom as the verdict was announced.

Siahn Cynthia Curran appeared before the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Tuesday, three years after losing her job with Ray White, a position she had once cherished, due to a prior legal issue.

The 31-year-old was already on probation for drug distribution when police encountered her at the Prince Consort Hotel in Fortitude Valley last January. She was found in possession of 10 grams of methamphetamine, allegedly intended for personal use, as reported by the Courier Mail.

Curran pleaded guilty to a single count of possessing a Schedule 1 drug in an amount exceeding Schedule 3 but less than Schedule 4. Her lawyer, Trent Playford, commented, “My client had a good upbringing, but unfortunately, she’s struggled with addiction. She began with occasional ecstasy use during social gatherings, but this ultimately led to a more severe addiction involving methamphetamine and GHB.”

Originally from Melbourne, Curran had relocated to Queensland in 2017, where she had spent five years working in the real estate industry. However, her life took a drastic turn for the worse in 2020 when she parted ways with her long-term partner. During a 12-day drug binge, she was arrested three times, resulting in her termination from Ray White.

In August 2020, Curran pleaded guilty to five charges and received a 14-month probation sentence, a recorded conviction, and a three-and-a-half-year driving ban. At that time, Magistrate Jennifer Batts emphasized how fortunate it was that Curran did not cause any serious accidents while driving recklessly and under the influence of drugs.

Three years later, Trent Playford informed the court that Curran was undergoing drug rehabilitation, possessed significant potential, and was sincerely trying to overcome her addiction despite facing some setbacks. He requested that the court refrain from sentencing her to jail. However, Magistrate Judith Daley pointed out that Curran had been found in possession of a “significant” amount of meth.

“You have returned to rehabilitation, but I am not convinced that you will stay there following today’s sentencing, as your history with rehab has been inconsistent,” she remarked.

Curran will become eligible for parole on February 25.
