A hidden gem among Sydney’s aquatic treasures has recently come to light, attracting sun enthusiasts from across the city.

Social media is abuzz with the news that the elusive beach has returned with one person saying they visit nearly every weekend with their dogs while others called it a ‘slice of heaven’
Fondly known as “Macca’s” by those in the know, Mackenzies Bay is discreetly nestled among the rugged shoreline adjacent to Bondi and Tamarama beaches in Sydney’s eastern reaches.
Typically, it’s a rocky bay where waves crash against the rocky outcrop. However, on occasion, almost as if by magic, the sea retreats, unveiling a sandy shore that’s perfect for idyllic relaxation on a sunny summer day. The picturesque bay’s sandy expanse has resurfaced, enticing beachgoers to wade, fish, and soak up the sun before it vanishes once more.

Sometimes Mackenzies Bay will disappear for years at a time with some nearby residents reporting it was once concealed for a whole decade
Sydney residents have eagerly seized the opportunity to revel in the clear, azure waters of this secluded sanctuary, as its sands’ longevity remains an enigma. Social media is abuzz with news of the reappearance of this elusive beach, with one individual revealing they’ve been making regular weekend visits with their furry companions, while others have described it as a “slice of paradise.”
However, a word of caution has been voiced for those eager to swim at Mackenzies Bay, urging only experienced swimmers to partake. “Although this is an exceptionally beautiful spot, its treacherous surf and swimming conditions make it unsuitable for the inexperienced,” one person warned.
Visitors are advised to adhere to council guidelines and swim within the marked red and yellow flags. The location has also become a favored spot for dog owners and their four-legged companions, as it remains unpatrolled due to its unofficial beach status.
Dogs are typically prohibited on all council beaches, including Mackenzies Bay, yet this area offers dog owners an alternative locale for their pets’ exercise.
The emergence of the beach is contingent on a specific combination of weather, sand, and ocean conditions. Sometimes, Mackenzies Bay can vanish for extended periods, with nearby residents recalling a decade-long disappearance.
Each year, beachgoers are treated to a distinct tableau at the bay, ranging from a narrow strip of sand to a rocky inlet devoid of sand. Greg Skilbeck, a sedimentary geologist from the University of Technology Sydney, explains that this phenomenon occurs when waves carry sand onto the coast from nearby sandbars.
Dr. Rob Brander, a coastal geomorphologist from the University of New South Wales, suggests that the rare sight is influenced by seasonal changes. He notes that the direction of swell patterns plays a significant role, but the quantity of sand on the beaches is also linked to longer-term climatic cycles. During La Niña phases, more storms and larger waves lead to beach erosion, while El Niño events bring fewer storms, smaller waves, and beach recovery.
