Prices may be surging in capital cities, but homes outside big cities are available for less than the price of a second-hand car, including in one spot where a house recently sold for just $5500.

Houses in inner Sydney and Melbourne may command seven figure prices but some of Australia’s regional homes are coming onto the market for as little as $15,000.

Analysis of the country’s cheapest houses for sale revealed there are at least eight homes currently priced at $30,000 or less, while last year more than 20 properties changed hands within the same price range.

The cheapest public sale was a one-bedroom house in a former community hall in rural South Australia, which sold for just $5500.

Among homes currently listed for sale, the cheapest is a two-bedroom house in South Australian mining town Coober Pedy advertised at $15,000.

NSW’s cheapest house is a fire-damaged home in the town of Moree, 650km northwest of Sydney, listed at $18,000. It last sold in 2018 for $12,000.
